Subject: Aaron update 136 Date: Friday, December 26, 2003 6:42 PM From: Kevin Quick To: Aaron Update List The roller coaster ride continues... We weighed Aaron this morning; 12.25 pounds again. So, he's gained 1 pound in the past four months, and nothing; zero for the past four weeks. We've been on the holistic track now for 3 weeks. On this current track, extrapolating out for another week or two or three, we don't foresee many remarkable changes happening, especially since Aaron is eating even less now than he was one, two, three and six months ago. And we believe we've reached the point where we really could use some remarkable changes. Aaron's still isn't gaining weight, he rarely hungry, he throws up nearly every day, and he's been refusing solid food entirely for the past week or so. This afternoon we called Dr. Lee, the neonatologist who took care of Aaron in the NICU last winter, and whose opinions we respect greatly (he's primarily the one who kept Aaron alive last winter, after all). He suggested to us that he'd like to see Aaron gaining 1/2-pound per week at this point, and he thought that we'll be getting into dangerous territory if Aaron doesn't start gaining some weight soon. He suggest that we get going with the Reglan. We have good, highly-respected friends (and some genuine experts) on both sides of this thing. One side says, "Don't dare give Aaron the Reglan; it's not even approved for use in infants," or, "my grandmother was on it and it was horrible," and we have others, mostly on the medical side, saying, "We use Reglan in the NICU regularly; it'll make your life easier; I've seen it do wonderful things." Not having any obvious signs from heaven hasn't helped our sanity much, either. (Wrestling with this thing theologically has been an interesting exercise for me. My conclusion so far is, "Man, I sure don't understand how God works!" I know James says that God gives wisdom to those who ask Him for it. But maybe this doesn't necessarily mean that God always gives specific answers to specific questions that we ask Him? Being a father now, I'm sometimes puzzled at how God seems to answer me in vague riddles, if at all, when I ask Him plain, unambiguous questions. But then, I'm not God. And, I do trust that He is and will be redeeming all that can be redeemed from this adventure, in the overall scheme of things, and in His due time.) No, we don't have "peace" about the Reglan, but we're starting Aaron on it today, anyway. Of course, there's no guarantee that the Reglan is going to work. If it does, then Hallelujah! If it doesn't, well, I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it. Thank you again, everyone, for your continued prayers and support. Thanks for bearing with us through this!
